“Birth is as safe as life gets.”
Harriette Hartigan
“Birth is an opportunity to transcend. To rise above what we are accustomed to, reach deeper inside ourselves than we are familiar with, and to see not only what we are truly made of, but the strength we can access in and through birth.”
Marcie Macari
“A strong intention, a relaxed body and an open mind are the main ingredients for an active birth.”
Janet Balaskas
“The purpose exceeds the pain.”
Beth Moore
“My dream is that every woman, everywhere, will know the joy of a truly safe, comfortable, and satisfying birthing for herself and her baby.”
Marie Mongan
“A healthy woman who delivers spontaneously performs a job that cannot be improved upon.”
Aidan MacFarlane
Rest, Relax…Surrender!
The Waiting Room
We offer a space in our office for those who are more than 50 miles from the nearest hospital, or who are traveling in for birth. We desire to make it as cozy and home-like as possible for our laboring moms. If you would like to utilize our facilities, let us know during your interview.
In the Event of an Emergency
In the event of an emergency, your birth team is trained in both CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and NRP (neonatal resuscitation program) and are prepared with the capacity to respond. Should you need to transfer care to a hospital your birth team will accompany you to the facility and remain with you until you are settled, or until the baby is born, depending on your preference. If the need arises to transfer during the postpartum period or for newborn support, your midwifery team is likewise prepared to accompany you to the nearest facility. If transport is necessary at any period we are still able to serve during the postpartum period.
*Note: Due to the COVID-19 virus, your midwife and/or team may NOT be allowed to accompany you in the event of a transfer. We will ensure your transition is as smooth as possible, will remain updated on your progress through text and/or FaceTime, and will visit you again once you and baby are safely back home.

Water Birth
“It is a matter of the woman being comfortable, not stressed, in a place where she feels safe, without people fussing, without other people stressing, without anyone else trying to have her baby for her, no clocks, no timing, no telling her what her body already knows.”
Montana Birth & Midwifery Services encourages the use of water, especially for labor. Utilizing a birthing tub has many benefits. Included among them are:
Allows mobility
Reduces the length of labor
Reduces blood pressure
Allows for privacy and prevents inhibitions
Provides relaxation
Increases pain relief and is known as the homebirth midwife’s “aquadural”
Should you choose a water birth with us our comfortable LaBassine tubs are available for rent in either the large or mini size. A member of our team will deliver the tub to your home and teach you how to set it up appropriately at your 36 week home visit. You must have an adequate hose adapter specific to your shower or faucet, a water heater capable to fill the tub initially, and several large pots to boil water and maintain temperature consistency throughout the labor. Your birth team will ensure the temperature remains between 97°-100° during your birth.
Labor & Birth
Whether you choose to birth in the water or on land, your midwife and her team will be with you. Our team will provide emotional support, physical support, observational care, fetal monitoring, and emergency care and equipment should it become necessary.
As your labor progresses we will encourage you and the father of the baby to engage and support one another as much as possible. This is such a sacred and intimate moment and our desire is to facilitate you to give birth to your baby. We encourage mom to keep her hand on her bottom in order to guide the baby out. Our team does not coach pushing, but rather encourages mom to breathe the baby down and out. After the baby has been born and mom has reached down and pulled her baby to her chest, our team will assess both mom and baby for well-being. We will note the time the baby has been born, but birth is not complete until the placenta is born. We encourage mom to participate in the delivery of the placenta, and the cord will not be clamped until the placenta is born and the cord has stopped pulsing. We encourage immediate skin-to-skin with mom and baby and prompt suckling.
