Amy Kirbow is a Certified Professional and Licensed Midwife who worked as a private practice midwife on the Big Island of Hawaii for 8 years. She is now living and serving under the Big Sky of Montana. Married to Derek for 25 years, Amy is the mother of three incredible sons, Joshua (23), Seth (19) and Elijah (16). Her midwifery journey began following the birth of her first son 23 years ago and became a full-time midwifery student in 2008. Amy began Kona Birth and Midwifery Services as an independent practice on the Big Island of Hawaii in 2012 to serve the women in her community and currently resides in Southwest Montana where she has begun Montana Birth and Midwifery Services to provide homebirth and midwifery services to the women of Southwest Montana. Although part of her heart will always remain in the islands, she has chosen to make her home in the mountains, a place she has loved since childhood.
She passionately believes birth is designed to work without intervention and that home is the best place to bring life into the world. Amy has been helping mothers give birth for over 15 years and it is her desire to equip both the mother and father to feel they were the ones to give birth on their terms. She strongly desires to help women find their way back home where true natural birth can occur. As a midwife, she believes her role is to protect the space inside the home and keep mothers and babies safe, loved, and respected. Her philosophy and approach is the less we do to intervene in the natural unfolding process of birth, the more it works.
Montana Birth and Midwifery Services believe in the team approach. Never will we intentionally attend your birth alone. As a practice we believe a good midwife is first an amazing doula, providing comfort and encouragement, and rarely does she need to go beyond that capacity. However, when there is a true emergency you want professionals for both mom and baby which is why we will always have midwifery assistants accompany the midwife. Montana Birth and Midwifery Services can proudly say we have never had a loss of a mom or baby in all the years we have practiced because we truly believe home birth is for the low risk, healthy mom with trained and prepared professionals to service both the easy and straight forward births as well as the more complicated births requiring many quick and capable hands.
Birth Assistants
You will have a chance to meet each assistant prior to your birth and will come to know them well throughout your pregnancy. All assistants, who will be on call during your delivery month, will attend prenatal appointments at various times during your pregnancy.
Laney Lewis- Certified Birth Assistant– NRP, CPR Certified
My name is Laney Lewis, I am a student midwife. Born in Spencer, Indiana. My heart has always been for families and kiddos and I am thankful to have been able to serve families in my hometown through working at my local YMCA for 5 years and taking on many positions anywhere from children’s swim instructor to daycare coordinator. I started my journey into midwifery in the Dominican Republic in 2019 where I was able to serve women and children and really start to build my philosophy on birth. After the Dominican Republic I moved to Hawaii to start studying midwifery through GoMidwife. My heart is for serving families through midwifery and it’s such an honor to be able to do just that in the beautiful state of Montana
